Summer is well underway on Long Island. I love this time of year. I am am an amateur botanist who gets excited at the sight of the first dandeloin! These islands are blessed with an incredible abundance of wildflowers and June and July are the months I enjoy them the most. This year is particularly good for wild roses. I have lived in this area for 18 years and have never seen such an abundance of roses. My daily walk from the house to Dartmouth Point is beautifully scented with roses and bayberry - combined with the fresh sea air - total intoxication!
It's a great time for birding in the area. I've been noticing lots of baby ducks on the cove in front of the house as well as the first of the shorebirds. The bird migration path known as the Atlantic Flyway passes close by here, so the island is very busy with birds dropping by all spring, summer and fall.
Whales, dolphins and porpoises have arrived in the Bay of Fundy. One fisherman friend tells me that he saw a rare North Atlantic right whale close to the island the other day. Whale watch companies are sailing daily.
I look forward to seeing you in Freeport this summer - happy travels,
Deborah
